Teaching and Learning in a Digital World

Final Reflection 

The Digital World is shifting as we speak, every day there is more programs, devices and software being designed. The Digital World is complex and it gets more and more unbelievable with every new advancement. The technology has changed education and the way we teach substantially, it is up to us as teachers to embrace, adapt and inspire with the use of technology in the classroom. We are now able to search and receive instant information within seconds, we are able to connect and communicate quicker and easier than before and we are able to express our learning in many more ways.

My first chosen topic was What is a Digital World?. This was the topic I decided to write straight on to my blog post.  When I was seeking information for this topic, my searches took me to many other blogs, which of course was great for inspiration.  I think blogs benefit students in so many ways, as not only can they display and express their learning, they are also learning how to write and structure sentences, giving their opinions, and receiving feedback from other students from all over the world. Another reason why i think blogging would be a useful tool in the classroom is that the children are able to learn and experience the world online therefore gaining awareness about online safety.

My second topic is Participation and the Digital Divide. This was my topic I chose to display as my auditory summation.  I had fun creating my avatar and adding my own voice to it was pretty fascinating so I think children would have an entertaining time using this application . Auditory learners would benefit from this program in particular as they can listen to information in a different and enjoyable way.

My third chosen topic is Digital Fluency and it was my visual presentation. The program i decided to use was Prezi. I really enjoyed designing my presentation, I thought the program was incredible, as it gives you so many options to modify and edit functions to enhance your presentation. I think it would be great to see children use this in class. For example, a child could display a project on the solar system, they could use circle slides as planets and insert facts about each planet. It is a fantastic way to show learning in a visual way.

Children of today are born into the Digital World and technology will grow with them. We as Educators play such as fundamental role in a child’s education experience, and with Digital Technologies helping us- The possibilities are endless…

Following is the script to my Voki

Lets talk about Participation and the Digital Divide for students in Australia.

Fortunately students in schools are lucky enough to be exposed to increasing amounts of digital experiences. However,  not everybody is able to participate in the luxury of consolidating these digital learning practices in the comfort of their own home, therefore causing the Digital Divide. As Jennifer Howell (Howell, 2012) describes, “the digital divide is the gap between what can be afforded or cannot to be afforded regarding ICT’s and digital technologies”.

Prue Bentley (Prue Bentley,2014) says the following about the Digital Divide “As we become more reliant on the digital world for communication, information and commerce, a new divide is opening up between the haves and have nots”

Now, we know the importance of being fluent in digital technologies in our digital world to learn, express and adapt. However what happens to those who don’t get the chance to fully participate? Are they being left behind? Will they be able to have the same opportunities to express themselves in their learning? How will it affect them in the future for both higher education and when they join the workforce? (Mannolini-Winwood, 2016)

21st century learners rely significantly on digital tools in the classroom. Digital programs such as Word, Powerpoint, Photoshop, website designing, and accessing the World Wide Web are just some of the digital programs and knowledge processing software that students use in the classroom.

From an employers point of view, they are what is referred to as digitally expectant. Employers expect their employees to be able to use basic digital technologies and have up to date computer literate skills. (Howell, 2012).

The CEO of Infoxchange, David Spriggs expressed his concern about the divide “There’s a whole range of aspects of our lives these days you just can’t connect with unless you’re online,”.(Bentley 2014) (Infoxchange, 2016)

In Conclusion

Although more students are being exposed to digital technologies in schools, there are others who don’t have the same opportunities in Australia. There is a divide between those that are information rich due to having sufficient access to information technology and those that are information poor due to the lack of access. (Durgasathyan, 2013).

We as Educators should endeavour to bridge this gap and put an end to the divide in knowledge by consistently supporting and scaffolding the learning of the child by opening up opportunities and providing enriched educational experiences.

What is a Digital World?

Topic 1: What is a Digital World?

The Digital World is amongst us, with increasingly growing technologies and digital devices that consume our lives today. The Digital World refers to the use of and exposure to the electronic tools, systems devices and resources that generate, store or process data. (Teaching with digital technologies, 2015)

When using digital devices, electronic tools and the expanding use of the world wide web, students and teachers learning in the 21st Century poses a demanding shift or movement towards the Digital World. Together educators and learners must gather, take advantage of and access knowledge by embracing the Digital World shift and facilitating the teaching practices of technologies by inspiring the learners of today through the use of digital learning. (Teaching with digital technologies, 2015)

As technology evolves, so do we as learners. The traditional use of textbooks, pen and paper is shifting as we now have the world of knowledge at our fingertips. In the year 2000, 91 per cent of Australian students had access to a computer, that figure then rose to 99 per cent in 2013. (Sue, 2015) Including the growth of internet usage, students were then lucky enough to have access through learning digital devices and in that timeframe 67 per cent in the year 2000 increased to 98 per cent in the year 2013, being a 37.57 per cent increase of student digital access just over a decade. (Sue, 2015)

In Conclusion

The Digital World is shifting, so must the educators and learners of tomorrow, it’s up to us as teachers to teach this ever changing way of communication and provide practices that access our fingertip knowledge based economy.  Using such technologies and learning devices give us opportunities to engage learners in lesson objectives, interact learners in the classroom and community and facilitate endless opportunities for the minds of students learning in our Digital World.
